Pictures of the Regents Canal
Little Venice to Limehouse.
The Regents canal starts at Little Venice in the Paddington district of West London. It runs for ten miles through Inner London to terminate at Limehouse docks on the River Thames in the East of London. Throughout it is broad and well maintained but it is city canal. It is well worth cruising as it is in its own way spectacular, but it is not a rural canal!!
It leaves little Venice. Here it used to meet the Paddington arm of the former Grand Junction canal, both are now part of the Grand Union Canal. It soon goes through Maida Hill tunnel, 272 yards. It then cruises along the north west edge of Regents park. Here is some of the most luxurious of London housing. Here also you cruise through part of London zoo.
After three miles you reach Camden three locks, passing alongside Camden Street Market. These three locks start the descent to Limehouse docks there are a total eight locks in the five miles from Camden top lock to Old Ford Road Bridge Junction, here also is Islington tunnel, 960 yards, while several basins open off the canal in this area.
At Old Ford Road Bridge Junction Ducketts goes off to the north east. Regents canal continues for another two miles and three locks down to Limehouse docks. The surroundings on this stretch are more industrial than previous.
Finally going under the Docklands Light Railway you enter Limehouse basin. These docks have now been converted into pleasure boat moorings. From the docks there is a lock on the south side to take boats out into the broad reaches of the River Thames, while in the north east corner Limehouse Cut gives access to the River Lee & Sort navigation.
