A Scrap Book of the building of Oak & Ash.

Steelwork of 'Ash'.

February 8th.

The construction of Ash is well under way. The steel plates for the base have been laid, and in the top picture you can see that the sides have been welded on, with temporary cross braces in place.

The lower picture shows some of the detailed steel construction required to build the shape of the bows.

February 13th Construction is started of the special shape for the stern of a Butty boat.

February 23rd The stern has the lowered deck and gunwales inserted.

At the bows the front bulkhead is erected.

March 4th. Construction of the stern nears completion with the cabin bulkhead in position and the walls of the rear cupboard added.

The erection of the steel sides to the main cabin commenced. In the picture you can see very clearly the temporary bracing used to hold everything in place.

March 13th. The windows are now being cut out of the sides.

The roof has been placed on the butty cabin. You can see the traditional lower height. You can also see the way the sides curve. This is why the roof went on first to enable the sides to be secured in place.

March 18th, Ash is almost finished, just the last few fittings such as the T-Stud and the bow locker lid still to be fitted.

March 27th. Ash is now virtually ready, the ballast is stacked ready to be fitted inside her.
