A Scrap Book of the building of Oak & Ash.

Construction of the Hull of 'Oak'.

Base Plate laid for 'Oak'. 21st November
Work started on Oak as promised. A boat being lengthened was craned out of the shed and the plates, seen on the left, which were to become the bottom of Oak, were laid out on the floor ready to be welded together.
Sides and part of the stern built by 5th December.

In the top picture you can see the view from where the bows will be showing the sides held in place by temporary braces.

In the bottom closer picture you can see inside the stern, with the swim, to be later hidden under the water, visible. You can also see the diesel tank, and the space in the middle where the engine will go.

The Bows and Counter built by 11th December.

In the top picture you can see the Stern of the boat, where the steerer will stand, has been built. Compare this with the picture immediately above to see the change.

In the lower picture you can see one of the men at work welding on the rubbing strips down the side of the boat, they protect the hull from scrapes against stone lock sides. Further forward the bows have now been built and the gas locker is being painted inside. To see the changes look back three pictures to see Oak without any bow just six days before.

The Cabin under construction by 8th January.

The upper picture is looking towards the stern, you can see two of the cabin side plates, the nearest with a patch of sunlight on it, and one of the roof plates is in the foreground being lifted over the side to be welded in place. The last roof plate rests against the side of the boat showing the bracing welded on the underside.

The lower picture is taken from in front of the boat and shows the cabin front with the doorway, and the rubbing strips on the bow, several of which will be under the water when the boat is completed.

The Steelwork finished 27th January.

The upper picture looking towards the bows shows the windows fitted, and the whole boat given one coat of paint to protect the steel.

The lower picture shows the detailed work which will be hidden under the water at the stern when the boat is afloat. No propellor yet, that will be fitted in a dry dock just before the boat is finished.
